Every day, life presents us with choices. At times, life requires sacrifice. What do you do when the time comes to choose? Join The Potter's House of Fort Worth and Pastor Patrick Winfield, for an encouraging message, "Purposeful Fire."

This particular sermon builds it message on Daniel 3:13-30 with the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. King Nebuchadnezzar built a golden image and, under threat of death by fire, demanded that everyone in the kingdom bow down and worship it. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, however, only served the true God, and they refused to bow down. Enraged, the king threatened to throw them into the fiery furnace, but they still refused. The king made good on his threat, saying, "What god will be able to rescue you?" But Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego knew – and their God did deliver them.

The king couldn't believe his eyes when he saw the three men walking around in the fire free and unharmed with one other man who appeared like "a son of the gods." When he called the three men out, he made a new decree that no one could disrespect the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego because "no other god is able to deliver this way."

This passage illustrates the life choices we sometimes have to make between right and wrong, faith and fear. Our culture will ask us to choose. Do we choose conformity or Christ? When we stand up for what is right, the devil will fight against us. He wants to make us fearful and useless, to interfere with our faith. Our resistance, however, will shed light on his darkness.

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego held firm to their beliefs. Their perspective and values set them apart. When they were asked to compromise, they refused. When they were told to worship something other than their God, they refused. When they were threatened with fire for holding true to their faith, they didn't give in. They knew that their God "is an all-consuming fire" (Hebrews 12:29). Their faith was greater than their fear.

Pastor Winfield then reveals some great insight into the theology of fire and fire's four Biblical purposes. The first purpose of fire is that it illuminates and protects. The second is that it cleanses and removes what doesn't belong. The third is that fire humbles your enemies just like King Nebuchadnezzar was humbled and gave glory to God when God delivered Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego out of the fire. The fourth purpose of fire is that it creates reverence. When God showed his power and demonstrated deliverance, He got the respect He deserves. The king commanded that no one speaks against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

This is the central point Pastor Winfield makes: There is purpose in our fire. What we go through won't end us. We must maintain our perspective and hold on to our faith. Don't give up. Nothing can defeat us. God can deliver us. In the end, God will be worshiped and, just like Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, He will lift us up too. "Those that honor me, I will honor" (1 Samuel 2:30).
