Join The Potter’s House of Fort Worth, TX and guest pastor Dr. Jerome Campher for “I am a Mustard Seed,” a moving message especially for Campus Pastor Patrick Winfield’s birthday.
This Sunday service was especially poignant and memorable as the church celebrated Pastor Winfield’s 45th birthday. Packed full of Wakanda-themed performances and touching tributes from friends, members and pastors, it was a testament to the impact that Pastor Winfield’s had on many lives throughout his ministry. An administrator from Clay Academy thanked him for his faithful mentorship of sixth-grade students, and Bishop T.D. Jakes concluded the presentation by acknowledging Pastor Winfield’s blessing as a son in the faith as well as a husband and father, not only to his family but to his church family as well.
Part of Pastor Winfield’s birthday celebration included hosting Dr. Jerome Campher as the special guest speaker. Dr. Jerome Campher is from Cape Town, South Africa, the founder and pastor of New Faith Church, and a good friend of Pastor Winfield.
Dr. Campher’s sermon centered on Matthew 13:31-32, which tells Jesus’ message about a mustard seed and how it is representative of the Christian believer. The whole chapter focuses on sowing seeds and different types of soil. For instance, wayside soil illustrates an uncommitted believer. Rocky soil illustrates a believer set in their ways. The thorny soil is a picture of a believer whose faith is suffocated by the anxieties and pressures of the world. Good soil, of course, represents a believer firmly planted in the faith. These analogies lead to Jesus’ comparison of the kingdom of God to a mustard seed.
A mustard seed is the smallest of seeds, yet it grows into the largest plant, a great tree that even birds can shelter in. Pastor Campher points out that the truth of our faith is that we are capable of doing things beyond our imagination. Our destiny is bigger than us and our seeming limitations. A mustard seed may appear insignificant, but it is full of potential. Within the seed, there is a tree waiting to sprout and grow.
Dr. Campher warns, however, that when we begin working toward our destiny, the devil will work against us. This is why many of us avoid doing the right thing. We want to be comfortable. We want to avoid conflict. We give up greatness for mediocrity. But for a seed to become a tree, it must go through a process, the process of growth.
The good news is that a mustard seed is one of the most resilient and powerful seeds out there. A mustard seed is able to fight back and withstand almost anything. It recovers quickly and will spring back when pressed. A mustard seed resists adverse weather and is immune to disease. It is packed with essential vitamins and helps with digestion, blood pressure, pain relief and congestion. Durable, long-lasting, sturdy, and strong, it’s also full of flavor. And this is the symbol Jesus chose to represent the kingdom of God – a promising identity and destiny for believers.
This means you are not insignificant no matter your past, your generational history, your perception of yourself or others perception of you. The only thing that matters is God’s viewpoint and who you are in Him. You have power. You can withstand anything the devil throws at you. You can recover. You can survive. You can thrive. God can transform you from a seed into a tree.
Dr. Campher delivers six principles of the mustard seed:
1. You have to find your man: God will bring you leaders that will guide you toward your destiny, but you cannot be a wayside believer. You must be planted in a place where you can faithfully hear and act on God’s word.
2. Allow yourself to be planted: No seeds are self-sowing. It takes humility to receive God’s message.
3. You must learn how to die: Seeds die before they produce fruit. In order to have a spiritually productive life, you must die to yourself and respect the authority of God.
4. Be prepared for a season of darkness: Moments of aloneness and isolation are important for growth in the same way that a seed is buried in the ground.
5. Commit to growing: When God plants you in a place of growth, let yourself be watered and disciplined and nurtured.
6. Become the greatest: Allow yourself to escape mediocrity and attain your full destiny.
Dr. Campher concludes his message with an exhortation to let God “provoke greatness in you.” Be willing and open to the process of growth.
