Pastor Winfield draws his message from John 11:30-44. This passage relates the story of Lazarus' death, his sisters' sorrow and how Jesus showed himself in the situation. Jesus knew Lazarus was ill, but he stayed away until he learned of his death. Lazarus' sisters, Mary and Martha, found it hard to understand why Jesus didn't come earlier and heal their brother, but God had a different perspective, a different plan, that they could not see because of their mindset.
Often, we find our faith strong when everything is going well. Everything is easy when life is easy too. But, as Mary and Martha realized through their brother's sickness and death, life isn't always easy. Everybody goes through hard times and traumatic experiences that make us question God and question our faith. Life is not perfect, and often, we are not taught how to cope when life gets rough. This passage reveals the truth of how to have a balanced mind even in the midst of less-than-ideal situations.
We often become frustrated when we know that God can do something to help us, but He won't. We find ourselves questioning God, asking why wondering what went wrong. Like Martha, our difficult situations cloud our faith. Martha thought Jesus was too late because he didn't respond the way she thought he would or should.
Pastor Winfield then reveals the three hallmarks of an unbalanced mind:
An unbalanced mind will never see the possibilities, only the pain.
Be aware of the contagion of an imbalanced thought life that comes through your relationships. Pastor Winfield points to the many people mourning with Mary and Martha in their house, making their sorrow and pain worse. He warns against surrounding yourself with people who make a bad situation worse than it is. He also points out that Jesus chose not to attend this mourning party because he didn't see Lazarus' death as a loss like they did but as an opportunity to demonstrate his power and grace.
Avoid operating in regrets because regrets lead to an imbalanced thought life. Mary and Martha told Jesus, "If you had been here, my brother would not have died." Living in regrets leaves us constantly thinking of if/then scenarios and Pastor Winfield points out that this mindset stems from the illusion of believing we're in control of our lives. Regret keeps us focused on the pain instead of seeing the possibilities with God.
Pastor Winfield then goes on to present three hallmarks of a balanced mind:
A balanced mind is able to discern between people and their mindset. In this passage, Jesus is a perfect example of this. He hears Mary and Martha's complaint and is frustrated because of their limited vision and faith. Jesus, however, does not take out his frustration on them. Instead, he acts to change their mind and reveal more truth, more of himself, to them.
A balanced mind is able to give heartfelt sympathy and faith-filled expectation at the same time. Jesus felt Mary and Martha's sorrow, but instead of wallowing in it with them, he chose to lead them out of it. He told them to show him where Lazarus was buried, asked them to "roll away the stone" and told Lazarus to come forth.
A balanced mind has directed focus, unbound expectation, allowance for productivity, mobility, and revealed character. When Lazarus emerged from the tomb, he was completely bound up, and Jesus told the people to unbind him. This included his hands, his feet, and eyes. Pastor Winfield points out that hands symbolize productivity, feet symbolize mobility, and uncovering the eyes changes one's focus, allowing them to see things in a different way. Mary and Martha thought they knew Jesus before; now, they knew him better.
Allow God to take you through situations that will renew and transform your mind, situations that will gift you a greater knowledge of Him.
