The Potter’s House of Fort Worth and Campus Pastor Patrick Winfield invite you to watch an illuminating message from special guest speaker, Pastor Keion Henderson. Keion Henderson is the senior pastor of The Lighthouse Church in Houston, Texas and a noted leader, speaker, and humanitarian. He’s the CEO of a global business enterprise and founder of the annual L3 Conference, the Well-Experienced Singles Conference, and the Business Startup Lab. He’s also led disaster relief outreach in Haiti, Florida, and Southeast Texas. A good friend of Pastor Winfield, The Potter’s House of Fort Worth was happy to welcome him for a special Sunday sermon, “The Pilot Light.”




Pastor Henderson’s message focuses on Exodus 27, which details God’s instructions for the building of the brazen altar, which would be the sacrificial altar in the tabernacle. Before one could enter God’s presence, a sacrifice had to be made; something had to burn. Pastor Henderson points out that the burn leads to a blessing. Sacrifice always precedes God’s blessing.

He then explains the intention of his sermon’s title, “The Pilot Light.” A pilot light is an instrument in ovens that, in the past, was always on because it was the oven’s source of initiation for fire. God is our pilot light. He lit the initial fire on the brazen altar and commanded that the fire never go out – no matter what.

Fire has different uses and effects. It can help and hurt. It may keep you warm or burn you up. Sometimes God will put you in a fire not to burn you up, but to burn up the stuff that binds you just like Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were not killed in the furnace; instead, their bonds were burned up, and they were set free.

Fire is very important theologically. It is linked with altars and sacrifice. Abel, Noah, and Abraham are just a few examples of Biblical men of faith who built altars to God. The meaning of altar is two-fold: “the nailing place” and “the lifting place.”

This is especially significant when you consider that Jesus was nailed to a cross (the altar) and lifted up. His words “If I be lifted up, I will draw all men unto me,” takes on new, powerful meaning when you consider this. Christ’s own sacrifice transformed into a blessing that changed the entire world forever.

In the passage in Exodus, God tells the Israelites to make the brazen altar out of shittim wood. This wood is known as a wood that does not rot and symbolizes the incorruptibility of Christ. Pastor Henderson delivers a strong and encouraging point: Since we are in Christ, we have access to His living power; we become incorruptible too.

Pastor Henderson then relays three points about the pilot light:

1) The first thing that keeps the pilot light lit is the blood. It never loses its power and always protects. The blood covers us.

Pastor Henderson points out that the four corners on the altar were used to tie down the sacrifice and are symbols of authority. When you choose what God wants for you, you will be blessed for whatever is sacrificed. There is power in the blood.

2) The second thing that keeps the pilot light is the bite. During Israel’s journey in the desert, God sent snakes to keep them from sinning. The bite turns us around from running in the wrong direction and leads us back to God. Our fire will always teach us a lesson.

3) The third thing that keeps the pilot light lit is the build. God instructed the Israelites to construct instruments for the brazen altar out of brass collected from offerings. Therefore, the altar and its implements were created out of the people’s offerings.

The instruments all had a specific purpose that allowed nothing, not even the ashes, to go to waste. They helped keep the fire alive, collected the blood, moved the sacrifice around so it would not be consumed, and released incense. The meaning for us is that God will give us “beauty for ashes.” He will make sure we are not consumed, that nothing we experience in our lives is a waste, and He will see that we are finally released, lifted up, into our spiritual destiny.
