Pastor Winfield points out how our perceived reality and the truth can be two entirely different things. We might see things one way when, in fact, they are something else. Our perception affects everything we do and everyone we come in contact with – thus, the importance of renewing our minds and seeing things from God’s point of view.

Centering his message on scripture from the book of Ruth, Pastor Winfield focuses on the character of Ruth's mother-in-law, Naomi. Naomi, like many of us, faced significant losses – her husband and her two sons. Left in a strange land with only her two daughters-in-law, Orpah and Ruth, Naomi felt isolated and defeated.

Naomi built her whole life around her husband and her family. She was a good wife. She was a good mother. Now, with her very reasons for being taken away from her, she fell into despair and felt that she had nothing left to live for and nothing left to give. Her life perspective focused on what she didn’t have vs. what she did have. Sound familiar?

Pastor Winfield shows how Naomi’s distorted view of reality threatened her from God’s blessing, and with his four principles, applies this lesson to our own lives:

1) When you are in a deceptive reality, you become stuck in a depressive self-narrative without the benefit of a godly perspective. Often, you focus on a single moment rather than looking at the bigger picture – the one God sees.

2) When you are in a deceptive reality, you define yourself and your whole life by one moment – one mistake, one loss, one disappointment, one failure. But God does not want you to define yourself by that one mistake or one loss. He is the author of your life story, and He can change the narrative.

3) When you are in a deceptive reality, you let the circumstance change your character rather than letting your character change the circumstance. Don’t let your circumstance define you – circumstances change. Don’t let your feelings define you – feelings change. Let God define you. Be who God made you to be.

4) When you are in a deceptive reality, you will miss your blessing. Naomi, when she let her present situation and feelings define her reality, pushed away her daughters-in-law, but Ruth determined to stay. She followed Naomi to Bethlehem, and as the story goes, Ruth met Boaz, married and had a son. This son (and Ruth) became a blessing to Naomi – a blessing she almost missed out on.
