Pastor Winfield asks, "What hinders us from serving each other?" It's not that we can't serve. It's that we won't, and the reason why usually turns out to be hurts and pains in our past, our fear of future hurts and pains, or imagining that service would demean us – otherwise known as pride.
Pastor Winfield asks three questions regarding "The Perils of Pride":
1) What is pride?
2) Is there ever a time when pride is okay?
3) How can we overcome pride?
He first clarifies that sinful pride is not the same as self-respect or healthy self-esteem. If that were the case, Jesus wouldn't have instructed us to "love your neighbor as yourself" (Mark 12:31).
Pride is lifting yourself, your plan, or your will over that of God's. He notes that the words for pride and haughtiness both come from the Hebrew word that means exalted – in other words pride equals exalting one's self over God.
One memorable Biblical example of this is, of course, Lucifer. Isaiah 14:12 calls him the "son of the morning" and laments his fall as result of lifting himself above God. As Pastor Winfield says, "Pride turned an angel into a devil." This simple statement shows just how dangerous pride really is. Numerous verses in Proverbs also warn of the dangers of pride, how it causes division, destruction, and brings "a man low."
Pastor Winfield also explains that the word "haughty" in Hebrew comes from the same root as "locust." This lends to the idea of an overpowering army suddenly multiplying from one into many, bent on destruction. Haughtiness is imagining that we are able to do without God, misusing our God-given abilities, or broadcasting our abilities – giving ourselves airs for talents or gifts.
Haughtiness is often reflected in someone who abuses or misuses their power. They make people serve them instead of serving others. It leads to a misuse of talents, knowledge, intelligence, and strengths – gifts that are ours because God saw fit to give them to us. We may only use our gifts or abilities for our own advantage, not for anyone else's benefit.
Pride also means that we're taking ourselves too seriously, and it manifests itself in our attitude and conduct. Pride reveals itself in our stubbornness, arrogance, willfulness (knowing you're wrong but not wanting to change), condescension, feeling that we don't need anybody, over-sensationalizing everything, being argumentative (wanting to have the last word), blaming, and being unwilling to forgive.
Another issue with pride, however, is that not only does it hinder us from serving others, but it also inhibits us from receiving service, from receiving God's blessing. Peter exhibited this kind of pride when Jesus washed the disciples' feet. He tried to stop Jesus from serving him, and Jesus said that if Peter didn't allow him to serve, then he would have no part with him (John 13:8).
Only the humble can serve and be served. Only humble people can be healed and stay healed. Christian humility allows us to receive from God and give to others. "Freely you have received; freely give" (Matthew 10:8).
Don't let pride hinder you from being a blessing to others. Watch the full message from Pastor Winfield and The Potter's House of Fort Worth, TX, "Dealing With Service Hindrances."
