God wants to be close to us, and we must be close to God to fulfill our true destiny. So, what's stopping us? Join The Potter's House of Fort Worth and Pastor Patrick Winfield for an illuminating message on the theme of "Transformative Sacrifice: Closeness."
The quality of our connection with God determines the quality of our connection with the people of God. If we want to be close to our brothers and sisters, then we must draw close with God. If we find ourselves fixating on the negative in people, then that is a sign that we must draw closer to God. Being close to our Creator will adjust our perspective so that we can focus on the positive in people.
Getting close to God, however, often requires some kind of sacrifice. In light of this, Pastor Winfield presents two questions for discussion based on Exodus 19:18-25 and Exodus 20:18-25:
What can separate us from the love of God? (What can keep God from loving us?)
What can separate us from loving God? (What can keep us from loving God?)
The first is a trick question. Romans 8:38-39 says that NOTHING can separate us from the love of God. God loves us no matter what, and He never stops. He only takes us through certain experiences in order to reveal something of Himself to us. God wants to be close to us, to show up for us, to demonstrate his love for us.
What, then, keeps us from loving God? The short answer is fear. We are too afraid of what we'll have to give up (sacrifice) to draw close to Him. The example of offerings in the Old Testament teaches us that we have to cleanse ourselves before we can get close to God – our flesh, our selfish passions, and desires, can keep us from loving God. We can't disagree with God and be close to Him. What's not in agreement with God, therefore, must be sacrificed.
God desires us, so He seeks to expose what separates us from Him. From Romans 8:35-39, Pastor Winfield explains what may stop us from loving God:
Tribulation: Feeling under pressure or that you are boxed-in without options.
Distress: Going through difficult circumstances. Our faith is not always convenient.
Persecution: Our faith may be challenged. We must resolve to live by our convictions.
Famine: There are times when God allows us to go without. How will we respond?
Nakedness: We may, at times, feel exposed. God, however, will protect us in the midst of our sacrifice. He will always cover us.
Risk: Every sacrifice is a risk. Giving of ourselves usually involves some risk. We must, therefore, continue in faith and truth because we cannot control the outcomes.
Sword: This references a short sword or a dagger, an implement used for retribution.
Principalities and Powers: This refers to attacks of the flesh and attacks of the spirit.
Pastor Winfield then relates this striking truth: Jesus went through all of these things on the cross to get close to us. He did whatever it took, everything it took, out of love for us. If God was willing to give us Son, what are we willing to give? If Jesus was willing to sacrifice everything for us, what are we willing to sacrifice?
