Join Pastor Patrick Winfield and The Potter’s House of Fort Worth for “Balance,” part of the “Transformative People” series. This particular sermon deals with making the most of your time, living a valuable life, and achieving true balance.

We often hear the phrase work/life balance. It references the goal of balancing your work schedule with fun and family time. But that’s not the most important goal in regard to balance. True balance is based upon our love for and obedience to God.

Pastor Winfield draws his message from Daniel 5:17-30. This passage tells the story of King Belshazzar, Nebuchadnezzar’s son. Although he watched his father learn the lesson of humility before God, he became prideful and made the mistake of believing all his accomplishments were because of him. God gave him influence, but he didn’t give glory back to God. As a consequence, God took away Belshazzar’s kingdom. Pastor Winfield delivers some important points from this story.

First, pride will bring you down. Pride leads to an imbalanced life. When you give more weight (glory) to yourself rather than to God, it leads to imbalance. Praise, however, brings you up. Being humble before God, giving Him glory, giving him greater weight in your life, will actually lift you up. Praise brings back balance into your life.

Another important truth is that God places glory in you. This glory is His purpose for you. The weight of this purpose, however, cannot be handled on your own. Whatever your dream or your vision is, give glory back to God, and He will help you carry the weight. His grace follows you wherever you go.

Because God has given you a purpose, how you spend your time matters. You only have so much time to do what God asks of you. It is important then to live life wisely. Your value is based not just on your uniqueness as God’s creation; your value is based on your obedience to God’s purpose for you. Balance is achieved by obedience.

Do not waste your time on things that do not matter. Do not waste your time in anger, hate, jealously, or bitterness. The value of your life depends on following God’s design for your life and doing what He created you to do. So instead of anger and hate, love. Instead of being jealous, be thankful. Instead of bitterness, forgive. Instead of spending so much time focusing on yourself -- on entertainment, social media, etc. -- focus more on prayer, your family, on things that have eternal significance and give your life true balance.



Finally, Pastor Winfield offers a somber thought: Whatever you don’t do with what God has given you to do, will be taken away -- just like King Belshazzar. Belshazzar lost sight of what really mattered and didn’t give glory to God. As a result, God gave his kingdom to someone else. Similarly, God took Saul’s kingdom from his lineage, and instead anointed David – a man after God’s own heart.
